Sportsbar Rockstar, the band opening the Shad Planking, is led by a guy who plays guitar left-handed and upside down. Keith Horne, a Virginia native, spent 20 years playing with the likes of Luke Bryan, Trisha Yearwood, and Peter Frampton. He moved back to Virginia from Nashville in 2010 (where he performed more than 60 times on the Grand Ole Opry stage) and put together Sportsbar Rockstar, which now includes guitarist Dean Berry and drummer Bryan Stiglich.
“I play left-handed, upside down,” Horne told us. “It’s kinda unique, but actually there’s a lot more guys playing like that now,” he said.
The band made its debut on January 1, 2011, and have been Wednesday night regulars at Wabi Sabi, a local hangout in Petersburg, Va., ever since. The band also plays gigs throughout the metro Richmond area. Their onstage chemistry and big sound—a combination of rock, funk, blues, and soul—keep their loyal fans coming back week after week. “When you got a good crowd and everybody’s into it, that’s what makes you want to play,” Horne said. “We work really well together,” Stiglich added.
Upcoming dates include Coles Point Tavern, Hague (April 23); Wabi Sabi (April 27); Sunset Grill, Manakin Sabot (April 29); and KC’s Crabs and Cues, Kilmarnock (April 30). Get your tickets for this Friday’s Shad Planking. Don’t wait, prices go up at the gate.
