Smithfield Foods and MB Grains Sponsor the 68th Shad Planking
Smithfield Foods, located in beautiful Smithfield, Virginia, is the #1 World Hog Producer and #1 World Pork Processor. Smithfield processes more than 31 million head annually and generates $15 billion in annual sales. It is the acknowledged pork industry’s leader, with facilities located across the United States and a number of foreign countries, employs more than 48,000 employees worldwide and has business relationships with more than 2,100 independent farmers who grow animals for the company. These good people work every day to feed the world with safe, wholesome, and responsibly produced pork products.
As one of our nation’s notable success stories and a household name, Smithfield cares deeply about its community. It has generously decided to sponsor the 68th Shad Planking and Grapes & Grains Festival, the proceeds of which go directly to rural and small Virginia communities. Sponsoring the event is a good example of Smithfield’s commitment to support local communities where it has a business presence. Smithfield has developed a world-class sustainability program that focuses on 6 core principles.
- Environmental Protection
- Animal Care
- Food Safety
- Employee Well-being
- Supporting Local Communities
- Value Creation
Murphy Brown Grain (or MB Grain) is a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods located off Highway 460 between Waverly and Petersburg, Virginia. MB Grain provides an everyday market for area grain and buys 10 million bushels of grain from local farmers annually.
Perhaps most relevant to the Shad Planking and Grapes & Grains Festival is that MB Grain embodies the “Grains” part of the festival. The Grapes & Grains Festival celebrates Virginia agriculture and farmers. It celebrates good, old-fashioned American hard work. It celebrates the kind of people who work from their heart every day to keep America fed. Just like MB Grain and Smithfield Foods, the Shad Planking and Grapes & Grains Festival seeks to celebrate the people, communities, and industries that make Virginia the greatest state in the nation.
MB Grain, as a local business and community member, wants to partner with local farmers across Virginia. It offers multiple marketing options, such as Basis, Futures, Spot or Deferred payment contracts. Please visit the MB Grain web site or contact local grain buyer David Coleman to ask how MB Grain can earn your business.
