“It’s a good time, I look forward to it every year. No pretenses. It’s relaxing—it’s just
plain fun.”—Walter North
The Shad Planking: Real People, Real Good Fun
The Shad Planking attracts thousands of visitors every year; some have been coming for generations. We realize that among our annual attendees are some of the most hardworking and generous people in the entire Commonwealth. We’d like to take a moment to recognize the great people who support our wonderful festival.
Today the Shad Planking recognizes Walter North, a man who keeps America moving at the Norfolk Truck Center. Walter’s wife, Mary, is a first-grade teacher at Windsor Woods Elementary School, helping our nation’s next generation of leaders grow into the men and women our future needs. People who make the world a better place deserve to be recognized, that is why, today, we recognize Walter North.
Walter and Mary work hand-in-hand and put their hearts and souls (and soles) into helping women and children in need. They love ballroom dancing, and at the Albemarle Area United Way’s “Dancing Under The Stars” they will compete to raise money for Hopeline, an organization that helps and shelters battered women and children.
Walter has been a regular at the Shad Planking for nearly 15 years. He remembers hearing Mark Warner speak as he was headed for office. Every year Walter and nearly 20 friends from the Rotary Club arrive at the Shad Planking in a limousine. Nearby Kiwanis Club members come too, and everyone has a good time together. They come back every year to catch up, talk about old times, and have some good clean fun. Walter loves the Shad roe and says you just can’t get anywhere it else. He enjoys hearing the political speeches and scholarship, but camaraderie is the main reason he comes—and to have a drink with good buddies in the midst of Virginia’s natural beauty.
When asked to sum up the event, Walter quickly responded. “It’s a good time, I look forward to it every year. No pretenses. It’s relaxing—it’s just plain fun.” Those are clear and honest words from a man who cares.
